Poem: Forgiveness
Three times he asked.
Three times I answered,
each with increasing desperation.
Three times I had denied.
Three times I must repent.
Three times I met his gaze.
Three times my eyes were lowered in anticipation.
I did not wish to see the sorrow and regret.
Three times he asked, each time his voice grew deeper.
Three times my answer stuck within my throat.
Three times I trembled still disturbed by guilt.
Three times he answered, giving me a mission.
Three times I felt unworthy of the task.
Three times, until I knew I was forgiven.
At that third time I raised my eyes at last.
Three times and countless more that memory haunts me.
What love and what forgiveness in his face.
Three hundred thousand times I tell the story
of how my guilt was cancelled out by grace.
